ITEMS REQUIRED:
5 test tubes- 5 beakers of 100ml-pipette-physical balance-water bath-spirit lamp-funnel-filter paper-carbon tetrachloride-walnut seeds-dry coconut-groundnut-mustard seeds
PROCEDURE:
Take 5 gm of each seed (walnut, almonds, coconut, groundnut and mustard) and crush them separately. Take five beakers of 100ml capacity and pour 20ml of carbon tetrachloride in each. Add 5gm of crushed seeds in each beaker separately. After about 10 minutes, filter the mixture of each beaker and throw away the residues. Take the filtrate of each beaker and heat it on a water bath until the whole of carbon tetrachloride gets evaporated. The remaining part will be the oil of the seeds. Weigh the fat along with the beaker and empty the fat into the test tubes. Then weigh the empty beakers separately. The difference of the weights in each case will give you the quantity of fats. Apply the formula given above and calculate the percentage of fat in each type of seeds.
