DEMENOSTRATION OF CLOUD FORMATION:
Saturday, February 20, 2010
This project shows how to simulate this phenomenon of forming a cloud in a glass jar.
One large glass jar- Fine chalk powder-Thin rubber sheet cut from a balloon- Rubber band
PROCEDURE:
Take a large clean glass jar and pour some water into it. Cover the jar with a lid and leave it for about 15 minutes. Some of the water will evaporate to form an invisible vapour. Remove the lid and sprinkle some chalk powder or talcum powder inside the jar. Immediately, cover the jar with a thin rubber sheet cut from a large balloon and put a rubber band around the neck of the jar. Now, compress the air in the jar by pressing the rubber with your fist. The air becomes warmer and absorbs more water vapour. After 15 seconds, release the rubber. The air cools. Some of the water vapour condenses on the chalk dust, forming a miniature cloud of water droplets.
