MAKING A MODEL OF ACTIVE VOLCANO:

Saturday, February 20, 2010

ITEMS REQUIRED:

Clay-Water-Plastic tumbler-Baking soda-Detergent-Red colour powder-Vinegar

PROCEDURE:

Build a model of volcano out of clay. Leave some space at the top of this volcano to fit the plastic tumbler in it. Put it in the sun to dry. When you want to show its activity, put three or four spoonfuls of baking soda in the tumbler. Mix together half cup of water, one-fourth of detergent, one-fourth cup of vinegar and some red colour in another tumbler. Pour this mixture into the plastic tumbler in which baking soda was put. You will see the smoke and bubbles coming out from the cone of the volcano in the same way as they do from a real volcano. The mixture of baking soda and vinegar produces carbon dioxide gas, which gives the appearance of eruption of a volcano. The red colour creates an effect of volcanic magma and the detergent creates more bubbles.
